Small group, self-contained bicycle tour through Cape Vert, Saloum estuary, featuring rural culture (Woolof, Serra and Dioula), historic sites (Goree Island), incredible bird watching, some wildlife, markets, unique architectural forms, art and beaches.

Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrive in Dakar, settle into the hotel and take an evening walk to explore the capital,its history and culture in preparation for heading into the interior

Day 2:
We cycle 10 miles into town to catch the 10 am ferry to Goree Island. Points of interest: Corniche West, Luba fisherman, University, history museum and slave prison.

Day 3:
A chance to do banking, post office, airlines and other business, and then leave town for a 25 mile bike ride to Niaga. Points of interest: markets, urban occupations, division of labor by age and sex.

Day 4:
We wind our way, 31 miles, off of Cape Vert through numerous small villages to Thies. Points of interest: Woolof ethnic area, museum, wall hangings center, phosphate mine.

Day 5:
We get off the beaten track, 31 miles to Mbour and see more traditional living. Points of interest: Peul herders, agricultural areas, birdwatching.

Day 6:
A 31 mile ride through coatal grasslands and forests takes us to Ndangame. Points of interest: Joal-Fadiouth, fishing villages and micro climates.

Day 7:
We ride through the ethnic regions of the Mandinka, Serrer and Fula, 51 miles to Foundiougne. Points of interest: estuary of Saloum River, highschool.

Day 8:
Two beautiful rides seperated by a great market,36 miles to Sokone. Points of interest: wetland birds, Passi Saturday market, mango and cashew groves, rice farms.

Day 9:
We leave the main road for a pure rural experience for a 43 mile ride to Nior Du Rip. Points of interest: village life.

Day 10:
A 34 mile ride to Kaolack. Kaolack is the largest town of the Sine-Saloum region, an important export center. Points of interest:salt flats.

Day 11:
Onward to Diourbel, for a 50 mile bike ride through Points of interest:

A 50 mile bike ride will take us back to Thies, the Woolof ethnic region. Points of interest:

A short day, only 20 miles to Bargny for a last evening in a rural village. Points of interest:

25 miles takes us back to Dakar and ends the program.
