The Center for Global Education is planning a seminar to Mexico focusing on the role of music in the struggle for justice and human dignity. Included in the program will be meetings with local street/club musicians making a living with their music and with local musicians who use music to advocate for social change and/or maintain cultural traditions; worship in settings with various styles of music from a mariachi mass to a student worship service to a capella masses; participating in and sharing music with base Christian community groups; visiting the village of Tepoztlán to hear a youth orchestra perform or practice and to meet with the director and some of the young musicians; attending the National Folk Ballet in Mexico City, a synthesis of Mexican music, dance and dress; participating in other visits to learn about the current situation in Mexico (political, social, economic) and to hear the people’s stories of struggle and hope. $1,325 including room and board, program expenses, and round-trip airfare from Dallas.
