Embark on a musical and wildlife adventure in Uganda. Join Nichole Smaglick in exploring the music of two tribes in Uganda, the Buganda and the Busoga. In remote villages, master musicians will teach us their driving rhythms under the jackfruit tree. Nightly, we join in their celebrations and in the mornings we are awakened by bird calls. We partake in magnificent game treks - on foot, via boat, and in 4-wheel drive vehicles - that reveal the flora and fauna of the region, chimpanzees, and a variety of other primates. And for those with the passion for wildlife encounters, gorilla tracking may be added either before or after our adventure.

We begin by escaping to the quiet paths of rural Uganda to two villages of differing tribes, customs and languages. These villages are the homes to many of Uganda's greatest traditional musicians, with some of them royal court musicians in their childhood. The laughter of children, a wayward cow, drying coffee beans and chatty birds paint the backdrop for our stay. We'll hear the voices of drums, xylophones, fiddles, lyres and flutes come alive under the musicians' master touch. There will be many, many villagers who are excited to get to know the visitors that came a long way to learn about them and their music. From nearby compounds, many villagers will be busy making food for all, filling the village with the aroma of sticky fruits, roasting goat and a plethora of vegetable dishes. In a place where there are no TVs, email, or phones, we'll become part of a community where entertainment is your neighbors' music and dance . In the heart of these villages we will be transformed from tourist to guest to friend as we not only learn their music and dance, but also share a slice of time.

Your Itinerary

Our expedition introduces us to Uganda's treasure trove of landscapes and wildlife. The plains, grasslands, and waterways of Queen Elizabeth National Park are home to elephant, warthog, kob, leopard, lion and a multitude of water birds. Kazinga Channel between Lake George and Lake Albert is teeming with the largest population of Nile hippo in the world. The forests and swamps of Kibale Forest host 11 species of primates including chimpanzees and colobus monkeys. Mountain Gorilla tracking is an extension option that is one of the greatest inter-species experiences on the planet. Bwindi's Impenetrable Forest is one of the richest ecosystems in Africa. Over 350 species of birds, 202 species of butterflies, astonishing flora and over 10 species of primates are found in Bwindi. Chimpanzees, baboons, colobus monkeys, and half of the world's population of rare, gentle mountain gorillas make this tiny park their home.

Join Nichole for this rare musical opportunity. Don't just pass through Africa . . . . Be There!
